To run the gauntlet значит проходить сквозь строй, т. е. подвергаться резкой критике, ожесточённым нападкам. Это выражение впервые вошло в обиход во время Тридцатилетней войны (1618—48), когда в наказание солдаты и моряки должны были проходить сквозь две шеренги своих сослуживцев, у каждого из которых была верёвка с узлами. От каждого нарушитель получал по болезненному удару. Слово gauntlet в этом смысле происходит от шведского gatlopp (gata — путь, lop — проход).
